We currently have a colony of over 150 Beavers living in the Tayside region of Scotland and I’m going to hopefully visit the area in a few days to try and photograph them- a long shot, I know. I’ve always been intrigued by their industrious ability to construct vast lodges in a relatively short space of time. Here’s a short film narrated by Sir David Attenborough showing how they do it.
We have them in our backyard and they are industrious and incredibly destructive. They are easy to photograph though.
Wishing you every success with your expedition Gordon, looking forward to your photos!
Thanks very much. Fingers crossed I get a little bit of luck. It’s also a good area for water voles, but they’re even harder to photograph!
And more for us to look forward too 😀
They are amazing creatures, thanks for sharing the clip, Hopefully you get some great shots to show us too 🙂
Thanks. They are notoriously difficult to photograph. Hopefully there will be an official reintroduction of them into Britain soon- this lot exist from an unofficial release.
They sound like the Cape Clawless Otters we have in the Western Cape in terms of being illusive and difficult to capture on film. I keep dreaming of accidently stumbling across one at dawn or dusk in our wetlands or on the beaches 🙂
What a wonderful opportunity for you. We will be in Scotland in June, but will not get to see this colony. I hope you are delighted by your findings. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for your comment. Bit of a challenge given how elusive they can be, but marginally easier to see than a platypus!
I came back to watch this again – I truly love how ingenious they are. My carport/garage needs a beaver – it is falling over…hahaha.
Yeah they demonstrate real intelligence. Hopefully they’ll become a common sight on our rivers again in the future.
